5 star hotel in New York, The Chatwal Hotel

I have usually stayed at the Lowell Hotel during my previous visits to New York but this time I decided to stay a few nights at The Chatwal Hotel near Times Square. I had heard so much about the hotel from friends and colleagues in London I just had to visit.

The Chatwal reminds me a lot of 45 Park Lane in London. The interiors have been done by Β the same person – modern, classy and upbeat yet not compromising on luxury. The hotel has an ideal location and for those who are scared of being too close to Times Square I can guarantee you – you won’t even feel it! It is definitely close to it but the location on the side street keeps the traffic away. Also, it’s very handy for those who need to go shopping at Fifth Avenue, visit Rockefeller Center and some other major attractions in New York. The hotel is also walking distance to Macys. Additionally, it is only a 25 minute walk to the Upper East Side. You get the best of both worlds! If you are up early enough (which I was due to jetlag) you must visit Times Square in the early hours of the day – it is surprisingly a serene place to be and you might catch a glimpse of the ABC Morning Show and New York generally waking up:

Back to the hotel, I loved the interior of the room – it isn’t traditional but it has the charm of an established New York hotel. It was modern, comfy and the bathrooms are to die for! Service isn’t too stuffy but attentive and the only regret I have is that I didn’t try The Lambs Club which seemed like an amazing restaurant with an old school New York charm to it.

I would highly recommend it to those looking for comfort and a buzz during their visit to New York – you can get both!

I came across the hotel very randomly but it just seemed to be a perfect fit for my stay in New York post NYE. Very close to the Empire State Building, walking distance to Fifth Avenue and home to the latest talk of town, Marta.

Once I booked, the Concierge team, Rachel, Gillian and Rene emailed me welcoming me to the hotel and offering to help out with any planning around the city. This was amazing! They realised I loved coffee places and this is what I was welcomed with:

A wonderful coffee tray amenity with coffees from around New York including Stumptown and Intelligentsia. I also got a coffee grinder which I still grind the coffee with. The concierge team added so much to my trip and guided me so well I will always be grateful to them! If you need good guidance, I would say go to them! They are locals, they love the city and you will see that reflecting in their advice!
The next thing that took me by surpise was the amazing view (what more could I have asked for?):
Third surprise, Marta is definitely one of the best restaurants I have been to in New York. The atmosphere, food, service and bar – all ticked boxes for a great meal out especially for somone new to the city. Friends from NYC had already been talking about it but I just cannot get over how welcoming and good this restaurant was. Serving awesome coffee, pizzas, desserts and drinks – this is the go to place in New York. Β I tried the pizza, the croquettes and something unsual – The Rabbit Meatballs. They were divine! Marta is not fussy or overpriced. It just celebrates serving good and fresh food that is affordable paired with good service.
Next the coffee is artisan and not being poured out of an automatic machine which most hotels do. It shows effort here and the fact that guests demand good coffee. If a hotel and restaurant serve good coffee – they’ve won my hear already!

My Stay at The Mark Hotel

I had heard a lot about the Mark Hotel from friends and colleagues in London and it was definitely on my hit list for places to vist/stay in NYC.
Little did I expect to be visiting in September and spending a night there. I have stayed at some amazing resorts worldwide and more recently the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland.
The luxury hotels in the UK offer the best service and quality that I have come across in recent years. I had also heard that hotel rooms in New York would not be spacious or as glamorous as those in London. The Mark Hotel experience proved all these assumptions to be wrong.
I was greeted with a very warm and elegant staff on the Friday morning I arrived there. It was 8 in the morning and I was definitely quite early before check in time. I was immediately escorted to the reception where they took my details and ensured that would call me as soon as the room was ready.
The entrance of the hotel is charming. Black and white marble flooring of the lobby gives it a very retro yet refreshing look. Despite being 3 years old the hotel still looks brand new!
I was headed to a meeting in Madison Avenue but before that I wanted to get a coffee at a local place. The Hotel Manager was kind enough to walk me over to Sant Ambroeus, a local and elegant Italian brasserie/cafe, a local hang out spot for those living and working on the Upper East Side.
The location of the hotel is definitely exclusive and very much has a neighborhood feel allowing you to feel at home instantly. The shopping on Madison Avenue is on your doorsteps.
When I returned I was escorted to my room, The Seventy Seven Kings Room. A beautiful room overlooking East 77th Street and featuring some of the best interior designs I have come across by Jacques Grange. The bathrooms were breathtaking! I say when you are on holiday you must get a decent and clean bathroom to ensure that you are pampering yourself and this was exactly what one needed!
The time I spent in the room was as enjoyable as in the surrounding areas. The advantage is you could go shopping down the road and come back for breaks. Central Park is 5 minutes up the road and the choice of restaurants is ample. At night time the serenity of the area really allows you to relax and enjoy the area.
My newspapers arrived with my morning coffee the next day at 6 am sharp allowing me to kickstart my day with great energy. The room service is of a high standard and the staff is super friendly and yet professional. My check out time was extended for my convenience and this really reflected that the hotel wanted to build a relation with their guests which is what one would expect from a 5 star property.
I couldn’t recommend this hotel enough. I would say that the service matches that of the Iconic London Hotels and is definitely going to take this hotel a long way!
